6 steps in goal setting

The 6 steps in goal setting:

Set goals the SMARTS way.

It’s important to think of goals as a process, not a place to be. State your goal as an ongoing process, not “I will be…”, but “I am in the process of…”

S-pecific / simple

M-easurable / meaningful to you

A-ction-oriented / as if now, all encompassing

R-ealistic / reasons, responsible

T-ime-conscious

S-teps required / smile, sincere (added by me from NLP)

S

Identify and write down your goals. Assign dates for achievement of your goals. “I want to go back to college” is not specific. “I am taking English classes at… in ___ Oct 2012” is. The here-and-now approach gives your automatic mechanism a time-specific target on which it may begin work today.

M

Are you doing something daily, weekly, monthly toward your goal?

How many kgs, how much time, how much money etc. is that you want?

Evidence procedure: you will you know when you get there?

A

What will you see, hear, feel etc.. when you have achieved that goal???

ACT AS IF. … as if you were already that person… as if you already possessed that skill… as if you were already in that position/situation… The world around you will have no other choice than to reflect all these. Focus on your skills. Bring through your action plan.

Identify possible obstacles, then separate the real obstacles from the fanciful ones.

Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed. If someone reacts negatively, “you’ve got to be kidding! You can’t do that!”, reaffirm your goal out loud “I’m sorry you see it that way. I’m determined to make this thing work.” Then avoid the person at least with this topic.

R

Your goal needs to be balanced between safety and risk, and must be realistic.

Ask yourself “What’s in it for me?” Who are you doing it for? For yourself? Good. Do you also take the responsibility?

T

Set time-conscious goals.

Be sure you allow yourself ample time to complete one goal before you move on to the next. If you don’t, you’re going to find yourself under intense pressure.

S

Smile, and be grateful for everything that you have.

A way to solution

Everything that interests you, should get attention from you. Also daydreaming! Listen to it, it’s trying to tell you something. why do we give our heads to other commitments in life? Instead of getting what we want? At the moment I don’t have my own office, and not meeting clients or giving trainings yet. Yet. Because the day will arrive. Not by itself though. I need to take certain steps to achieve that outcome. The question is: are you willing to take the necessary steps towards your goal? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone? /because that’s only how we grow/. And if your answer is Yes, you might say, but hang on, I have a lot of obligations throughout the day, the weeks, takes most of my time, and when I have some free time, I just need to relax, or I just make up for the things I didn’t get to finish before. Well, I hope not all of you are in these shoes.. If not, be grateful for that. In my situation, that is the case. Right now. So I know exactly what I’m talking about.

Now it’s almost midnight, and I would just go and sleep, since tomorrow is an early wake-up again.. but it’s very much the time to continue the last post. I would feel really bad if I put it off again.. So, I threw my tiredness away. I decided the opposite. This is something, what you can do too, if you don’t have any other resources to help you. Cut some time off your relax time. Keep some time to relax!! But you could cut a little bit off, couldn’t you? Or cut some time off of something else, that wouldn’t hurt. It will be an investment, in yourself.

You need to have a list of the things that you like to do, or used to like, whenever it was, whatever it is, things that make you enthusiastic, and makes you happy… We were talking about the carrier in the last post. I forgot to mention, that you also create another list. Get a new piece of paper, and list aaaall your skills and capabilities, everything that you are good at! Don’t be humble.. Now it’s time to face all your positive skills! Make that list now, and when you finished, come back to read on.

Oookay. Welcome back 🙂 Did you really do it? On paper! This blog is action orientated! Because that is how results born.

You know, once I asked the question to myself: What would I do, if I had millions of dollars? I mean, after the travellings, shoppings, moneysharing.. What would I invest in? What would I love to deal with?  Yeah, an owned café or even hotel would be nice, maybe the beauty industry … But I didn’t feel any interest towards them, in terms of day to day operation, details.. So I asked the question: What is the thing I am good at? I know my skills (eg. touch-typing), but what area am I also interested in? I could say only one thing. My communication/people skills. I am good with people, talking to them, understanding and helping them. I like doing it.

So, look at both of your lists, about the things that you like to do or used to like, and the other one about everything that you are good at. Is there a common factor? If you like doing certain things that you are good at, and vice versa, does it tell you anything? For me it certainly does. It has just given you the answer for the question: What do I want? Now, how to get started..

As you may know, every start is difficult, and it’s fine. When you have your goal, try to chunk it down into small pieces, into smaller goals, that you can undoubtedly achieve. Do it particularly if your goal is quite big. And then forget about the higher chunks. If you keep straining yourself to achieve the big goal, you’ll end up with losing enthusiasm, and achieving nothing. But the smaller goals are manageable, and as you walk to the next one and next one, you’ll feel the fire inside you more and more, and the proud that YES, you Can!

On the left side of this blog there is a widget called “Book content/review”. The book is called: Maxwell Maltz – Psycho cybernetics 2000. There is a technique detailed in it, called SMART. Set your goals on SMART way (I have added another S to the end, from NLP). Explains the right way to set your goals.

In the SMARTS, it also says: surround yourself with people who want you to succeed!

So your next important step (after your 2 lists) is to set those goals in the SMARTS way. And remember! Know your purpose, but set aside the higher chunks, and deal with the first things first! One step at a time!!! (a kid doesn’t just hop on the bike and start riding.. we learn usually with 3 wheels… the first step first… and the next one… and then just 2 wheels.. then a bigger bike… then cool bike tricks..).

Also remember! Whatever you goal is, keep in mind that the process needs your flexibility! Things will change, so be able to keep up with the changes, accept them, and alter your plans where needed, update, just like in a blog, on Facebook, your friend about your stories..

Let’s just say out loud: Wherever you are heading to, you will arrive. (If it’s nothing special, then it won’t be any special and things will always “just happen to you”. It’s fine, as long as you are happy with your situation.)

When you are about to achieve something, you usually need at least money or time, or both of them. When you think you don’t have enough money, what you always can do is to do everything that doesn’t cost you anything. Such as: more effort, give some more of your time, brainstorming for ideas by asking people “how would you do this?”, build up a network of people, etc.

In case you start putting things off, make a plan, on a paper. You can always reorganise something in your schedule. Eg. what is the thing that you could do another day on the week or another time on a day.. or for less time maybe.. something that you could ask somebody else to do for you, so it would clean up a spot in your schedule.. perhaps it’s only your focus that needs to be supervised by you (like for me, everything needs to be written, otherwise my tasks tend to slip out of control..), a bit more task orientation could help (again, paper format is highly recommended!! even if you don’t like it. It will be in front of eyes to guide you), first things first!

Yes, it can feel like sacrifice is part of the business. Well, if you can make a better deal, do it. The only thing that counts is that you take action.

After the mentioned techniques, advices and references, the whole thing needs only implementation.

…in the “Book content_review” (on the left side, if not available, pls try later), it’s a must read book. Maxwell Maltz: Psycho Cybernetics 2000. About all the connections between our thinking and the outcomes, how we create our own world… and how can we change on it. I wrote out only the main parts of the book, some techniques, but I highly recommend to get the whole book for yourself. Take a look at the first page, and you’ll get a picture of what this book is about. As I said, I personally chose some parts that I wanted to share, so it’s not usual review. I hope I could get your interest.

What do you want (out of life)?

Hello hello 🙂 What if the major question for you is “What do I actually want?” Because it is a problem to many of us. Just because I’m in NLP and reading these books …. it doesn’t mean that I can walk on water. I still find myself sinking into that water sometimes, getting off track. The only difference is that I know which tool I need to pick up to change that actual situation.

Many times I hear many people saying, I don’t know what I want in life… (career, relationship, anything). Let me tell you, I can relate to this, too.

Let’s start with one of the major areas in life. Career.

There were a few points in my life when I had the feeling what I wanted. First in college, a teacher of mine mentioned Life Coaching… I looked it up on the Internet, and I reacted: WHAAA, that’s what I want to do! that’s what I’m interested in! (before this, I always used to know only what I didn’t want 🙂 at least something..) So from then I was searching for courses and pricing… that finally turned me down…. I thought “What a pity.. It would have been just perfect for me..”

Then, a few years later, here in Aus I got a ticket to a Christopher Howard (life coach, business coach, master NLP trainer, public speaker, author) 3-day event (Breakthrough to Success), that was the perfect kick-off event for me!… I just didn’t know how to get started… those courses are really expensive and time consuming (beside my other obligations).

Then, another year later, I went to another event of him, and then there was the shift! Being together with many people for a 3 day event, you collect a few buddies. I received an advice from them, to start with only NLP first, find a course and do that only. (because I’m one of those people who like to do/get/accomplish everything at the same time immediately :D) So I said, “yes, I could do that, okay, I’m gonna leave every other part of the studies of this career for later, and I’ll start with NLP only, I’ll find an affordable NLP course”. AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN. Get this. Chris Howard and the other speaker Johnny 1-2 times a day handed out a set of course materials as gifts in the form of audio CDs or manuals to somebody from the crowd. When in the middle of their speech they start to flourish these things above their hand asking the audience who wants it badly…. everybody stands up and shouting “me me me” waving towards him… you can imagine appr. 200 people doing this… I was hoping to stand out from the crowd… So. Who do you think the person was who got the manual and the practitioner CDs from Johnny? and in the next round who got the master practitioner CD collection from Chris? 🙂 🙂 🙂 ………….. Yes, both times it was me!!! I almost cried. That was a real rising moment for me, and one of my happiest moments in life. I knew that it was time.. I don’t even have to tell you, my peers were astonished too 😀

So, what happened is, that I made up my mind, I committed myself to a way, I was ready, I knew clearly what I wanted. Then all the other things lined up instantly in my service. There is a basic rule (from Huna): Energy flows where attention goes.

By the way, later I enrolled myself into the QC Seminars NLP Practitioner course on a very good price 🙂

Let me just clarify why I’m using personal examples that much. It’s quite simple. Because I’m gonna speak only what I do/know/experienced, so it’s all authentic, tried, real, it’s all achievable and feasible.

So, how did I actually end up knowing my goal? hm, for many years I was away from it. Then when I got to the stage when I was ready for a shift (recovered from my breakup, found a suitable job), I changed the things (started dating again, rented out a single apartment for myself from my own money – after staying at parents), and after standing up from the floor, the things also started to change around me changing my situation (first I was made redundant, then my friend told me about the Australian life opportunity..).

I was just following my interest. When I accepted that free ticket to the C H event.. I did it because I wanted to be there, I was so intrigued to see a Life Coach on stage. Then I ended up with people around me who gave me constructive advice, pointing to my goal. Then I committed myself, got a clearer picture.. Got that? What was the very first step? The interest, and then I followed my heart, my calling.

We are looking for that “purpose” in all age ranges, from young to older. But have you ever sat down with a pen and paper to design your “tomorrow”? We are not taught to do so. We were taught to follow the same lifestyle that everybody else lives, some of us were less fortunate and got their ways already designed by others.

So. How to get a clear picture of what you want (in career, in relationship, anything).  Write out all those things that interest you. If it’s about career, what are those productive things that you do (or used to do, maybe in childhood) with enthusiasm, passion, curiosity? That would make you feel happy and fulfilled to continue doing? Be honest with yourself. Give yourself a comfortable 30 minutes. Because the real stuff need some time to come out of your unconscious mind, that you buried there long ago. It’s gonna be a realization process, so take your time, with no disruption. Some of you might need less time. When you find those desired goals, start writing them out as detailed as you can. It’s important. And we’ll continue from here, and discuss what to do with the list.

So, get a big inhale, and start writing your answer for the main question of your life. see you soon 🙂

The beginning…

Hello Everybody! Well, it’s always the beginning… every single day, isn’t it. I’m still trying to learn how to set up this blog as to look like as I want it, meanwhile I would like to start writing to you already. So let’s just kick off with a clever statement that is about setting up a “new thing” (can be business), that I learnt from some successful and clever people: It’s never gonna be ready (finished). You gotta go out there and start, because the point “it’s ready” (it’s finished) will never come. Ever-changing and ever-challenging everydays…

Also, another statement (from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer), that’s also true: The only moment, when “you are ready”, when “you are finished”, is when you die. So get use to the idea to be willing to “start” when it’s “not ready yet”. Because if you wait until “it’s ready”, you never gonna “start”.
